Do They Have Christmas in Space?

by Charlotte Langtree

Shari huddled around the fire with her family on Christmas Eve. Her husband, Kendeth, added more wood. Six-year-old Dovid entertained his little sister by telling stories of Christmas before the Exodus. Laylie was only three, and adored her brother.

They’d been lucky when they crashed on Forian. Other planets weren’t as hospitable. At least Forian had breathable air, and grew food they could safely eat. In many ways, it wasn’t that different from Earth. Humans had started to inhabit it a few years earlier, so at least there had been people to help them.

Shari told herself it would be okay. The Exodus had been the most terrifying experience of her life but it was over. Her family was safe. Nothing else mattered.

“Dovid,” Laylie asked in a small voice. “Santa won’t come anymore, will he?”

“What?”

“Well, he could fly all over Earth in one night. But we’re not on Earth. He won’t be able to fly around the whole universe.”

Shari’s eyes stung. It was just one more thing that had been stolen from them when they’d run from their home. She was about to comfort her daughter when the sound of jingling bells drifted through the air. Dovid shot to his feet, mouth agape.

“Ho ho ho!” a voice boomed. “Merry Christmas!”

Kendeth opened the door wide, and everyone gasped. On the doorstep, illuminated by the trio of gleaming golden moons above, was a pile of brightly wrapped gifts. Behind them, standing like a tinselled beacon of hope in verdant green, was the most beautiful Christmas tree Shari had ever seen.

“It’s a miracle!” she cried.

Kendeth put his arm around her as Dovid and Laylie began to carry the presents inside, their eyes wide with wonder.

“It’s Christmas.”
