A Christmas Visit

by David Green

The portal tore into life, the blue and white lights whipping themselves into a frenzy.

“It’s now or never.” Anna shielded her eyes, took a deep breath, and strode through.

She blinked as she took in her surroundings. Anna stood in her bedroom, as it lay two weeks ago. Before … well, before she destroyed the earth.

A quantum physicist, Anna Jones had created time-travel. A wonder, a miracle. She’d dreamt of the changes she could bring to the world. On her first trip, Anna’s actions altered the course of history, and destroyed everything.

Now, she had one shot. A final trip back. The portal would stay open for sixty seconds. Enough time to speak to herself, and persuade her not to repeat her mistakes.

“Who are you?” A sleepy, fearful question. Her voice. “Are you a ghost?”

An idea. Anna knew the portal behind her, with its blinding light, would obscure her.

“Yes,” she answered, making her voice husky. “The Specter of Christmas Future. Heed me!”

The other Anna, the one from two weeks ago, screamed, launching herself from her bed as she charged towards the en-suite bathroom.

She didn’t make it.

The Anna of the past slipped, and her future-self winced as her doppelganger’s head cracked against the bedside table.

Anna rushed forward, vomit rising from her stomach as she saw the blood spilling from her dead-self on the floor.

With a snip, the portal closed behind her, trapping Anna in her own past.

Breathing ragged breaths, she closed her eyes as she failed to calm herself, until she heard a faint whisper in the back of her mind.

‘Only one thing for it,’ it purred. ‘Take her place. It’s too perfect.’

Anna’s eyes shot open, and she smiled.

“Yes. Now to get rid of the body.”
