A Light Through the Night

by J.W. Garrett

The little Fae girl stumbled from the forest, lost, alone. Fog clung to the night as she continued toward the light that drew her forward like a beacon. Pasting her face against the glass, she sought the soft, warm glow. Inside a fire crackled, a lush feast laid out on the festive table.

Celeste watched intently, taking in the scene, her own light shining within as the gathering began. With a loud clatter, the window flew up, and she tumbled backward in a tangle of legs and gossamer wings.

“Look at you,” the other girl gasped. “I’m Jessy.” Stretching out her hand, she offered treasures to the Fae.

Celeste took flight, then hovered, uncertain.

“Come. Warm yourself. Don’t worry. I’ll bring you back here.”

Buzzing excitedly, Celeste ducked inside. The dwelling hummed with activity, and when a quiet descended, she fluttered to the fire. Jessy filled her plate, and a smaller one for Celeste before joining her by the grate. Munching on their treats in silence, they gorged themselves until both settled into sleep.

The evening wore on. When Celeste opened her eyes again, the fire had died to slow, burning embers. Jessy stirred, jerking her head toward a brilliance chasing the inky blackness of night.

In a sweep of wings, Celeste dashed to the window. There, burning a path of twinkling radiance, pockets of Fae gathered, their shimmer painting the way home. But my new friend …

Jessy blinked, opening her eyes against the brush of wind and rustle of wings, and a new voice. “Now to our world, human child. And a different kind of feast.”

“Will I return before morning?”

“Time passes differently in our realm. One day there can represent years among your kind.”

“So, when will—”

“You’ll return. On a morning. Of that I’m certain.”
