Heavy thumps, like someone beating a carpet, followed Michelle up the basement steps. Whatever had infected her husband now animated his corpse, filling it with ravenous, relentless hunger.
Terror, almost paralyzing, muddled her thoughts. For the sake of their infant son, she forced herself to focus, strategize.
Putting down the laundry basket, she latched the door, and then dragged a kitchen chair to wedge under the knob.
Suddenly, her baby squalled—his cry strangely muffled. Panicked, she began tossing out laundry.
Finally, a second cry confirmed that her baby was safe from suffocation.
His cries had come from the basement.
